I have never stayed in a hotel in New York City so I really don’t know all about these places.  I remove a hotel from this list if I hear something bad about it.  So, if it is on this list it certainly is worth at least looking into.  My own tour information is at www.gabby.com/fun.

Quality Hotel Midtown

59 W. 46th Between 5th & 6th Ave. 212-719-2300, 1-800-848-0020, fax 768-3477. $149 - $159, Suites from $179. Low prices and good location in the theater district. Built in 1902.

The Gershwin Hotel

7 E. 27th between 5th & Madison Ave. 212-545-8000, fax 684-5546.  $25 per person in 4 to 8 bed dorms. $89 - $129 for 1 to 3 people in private rooms. Pop Art with Andy Warhol.  It's close to Fifth Avenue. 

New Yorker Hotel  

481 Eighth Avenue at 34th Street. 212-971-0101. As low as $159 per night.  Located in Midtown Manhattan, this hotel is close to the Javits Convention Center, near the Empire State Building and not far from the Theater District, by foot or taxi. This 1000 room NYC Hotel is at Madison Square Garden, The Paramount Theater, Penn Station and a 5 minute walk to Macy's.

The Herald Square Hotel

19 W. 31st between 5th Ave. & Broadway 212-279-4017, 1-800-727-1888, fax 643-9208. $50 - $125. Used to be the Life Magazine building. Near Macys and the Empire State Building.

Malibu Studios Hotel

2688 Broadway at 103rd St. 212-222-2954, 1-800-647-2227; fax 678-6842. $45 - $89;   Near Riverside Park & Columbia University. Residential.

Off-Soho Suites Hotel

11 Rivington St. between Christie St. & the Bowery 212-979-9808, 1-800-633-7646, fax 979-9801 $97.50 - $169.  The suites are supposedly well sized

Hotel Edison

228 W. 47th St. at Broadway 212-840-5000, 1-800-637-7070; fax 596-6850. $115 - $125, Suites $130 - $200. Art Deco lobby, with high-ceilings. Good location for the theater district.

Howard Johnson Park Ave

429 Park Ave. South between 29th & 30th St. 212-532-4860, 1-800-258-4290; fax 545-9727.  $105 - $249, Suites $149 - $449.  Very popular spot with the Europeans.

Pickwick Arms Hotel

230 E. 51st St. Between Second & Third Ave. 212-355-0300; fax 755-5029. $60 - $110;  Most rooms have private baths.  Small rooms. Located near Radio City Music Hall and the United Nations.

Arlington Hotel

18 West 25th Street at 5th Avenue. $105 - $145. 212-645-3990.  This is an inexpensive New York City hotel in Silicon Alley close to insurance companies as well as internet communications companies, web designers and dot com startups. Located in between Midtown and Greenwich Village.

Cosmopolitan Hotel

95 West Broadway at Chambers St. 212-566-1900, 1-888-895-9400; fax 566-6909. $89 - $119. Nearby Tribeca area, near Chinatown, Little Italy, South Street Seaport and Soho art galleries.

Quality Inn Hotel 5th Ave

3 E. 40th St. between 5th & Madison Ave. 212-447-1500, 1-800-228-5151; fax 213-0972. $149 - $225. Near New York Public Library, Bryant Park and Lord & Taylor. 

The Lowell Hotel

28 E. 63rd. St. between Park & Madison Ave. 212-838-1400; fax 319-4230. $325 - $425, Suites from $525 - $1,800. Landmark Art Deco bulding.  Chinese porcelain and marble baths.  Wood burning fireplaces in the suites. Famous people such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Madonna stayed here.

Shoreham Hotel

33 West 55th Between Fifth & Sixth Ave. 212-247-6700. 800-553-3347; fax 765-9741. $245 - $275, Suites $295 - $335.  Midtown location.  Marble floors, curvilinear ceiling and a modern Deco look. 

Washington Square Hotel

103 Waverly Pl. between 5th & 6th Ave. 212-777-9515, 1-800-222-0418; fax 979-8373. $110 - $159. Next to Washington Square Park. Joan Baez and Bob Dylan lived in this hotel singing in the park before they hit it big time.

Mansfield Hotel

12 West 44th Between 5th & 6th Ave. 212-944-6050, 1-800-255-5167; fax 764-4477. $209 - $279  In the last few years this hotel has been renovated to it's original beauty.  The first floor library hosts piano & harp recitals.

The Inn at Irving Place

56 Irving Pl. between 17th & 18th St. 212-533-4600, 1-800-685-1447; fax 533-4611. $275 - $395.  19th Century Victorian townhouse near Gramercy Park.  Only 12 rooms, makes it one of the smallest in Manhattan, very romantic. Some rooms are small but each has a fireplace and four poster bed.  There isn't a front desk, but a parlor with antique cart serving punch and sherry.

Hotel Wellington

871 7th Ave. at 55th St. 212-247-3900, 1-800-652-1212, fax 581-1719.  $155, Suites from $170 - $185. Close to Central Park, Museum of Modern Art and Broadway.  A gold domed ceiling with a chandelier.
